Football News : Salford Cup Final
12 April 2017
On Tuesday 27th March our Year 9 football team played against Oasis Academy in the Salford Cup Final. Our team was depleted due to student illness but a couple of our Year 8 students stepped up to join the squad. The Swinton High started superbly and aggressive pressing led to Oasis misplacing several passes which enabled Swinton to play the majority of the early stages in the opponents half. A Derryn Harrison goal gave Swinton a 1-0 half-time lead which could have been three or four nil with more accurate finishing.
Jacob Jeffrey came on as substitute at half-time and quickly doubled the lead with a superb dribbling run and finish to the bottom left hand corner. From this point on the result was never in doubt and any Oasis attacks were swiftly dealt with by Alex Francis and Callum McWilliams in defence. The second half, like the first, was played predominantly in Oasis' half and Jacob Jeffrey scored his second, and Swinton's third, goal with ten minutes remaining smashing a low shot in from close range at the end of a free flowing move.
Sam Saunders and Peter Adinnu often raced forward from full back positions to give extra attacking options with midfielders sitting in their positions maintaining a solid defence. The final whistle sounded ending a captivating, dominant display with Man of the Match, Alex Francis, lifting the Year 9 shield.
Congratulations to the WHOLE TEAM for a wonderful effort!
